Biferno, Italy

Twelve Baltimores airborne by 08.46 hours from BIFERNO to attack the railway bridge near GUILIANOVA. The formation attacked in two boxes, line astern from 10,000 feet. The road and rail bridges were straddled with short sticks; the main concentration between, and on either side of both bridges, with direct hits on both. Moderate, inaccurate Heavy Ack Ack from target area. Four Spitfires provided close escort from base. All aircraft down by 10.40 hours. Sortie Report No. 613.
On the second raid of the day the target was 40 Railway Trucks in SAN BENEDETTO Station. 21 Squadron led by 55 Squadron to the attack and the formation bombed from 14,700 feet. Whole formation undershot and straddled NORTH mole and small ship (left smoking). Eight Spitfires provided close support and no enemy opposition was encountered. All aircraft down by 16.15 hours. Arrangements were made for the funeral of F/Sgt Johnson who was killed the previous day in a flying accident. The new camp is nearing completion and permission was given to Officers and Sergeants to select their tent sites.
Lieuts. Askew, Murman (pilots) and Lieuts. Lambert and Harle (observers), Lieut. Strydom (WT/AG) having completed their tours were grounded prior to being posted to BARI on their R.T.U.
