March 17, 1944

Biferno, Italy

Twelve Baltimores from this Squadron leading a formation from 223 Squadron set off to bomb FROSINONE town. Due to its proximity and similarity, 21 Squadron & 223 Squadron in error attacked FERENTINO town. The whole formation pattern extended slightly N.W. of town with some direct hits on both roads. No enemy opposition and all aircraft returned to base by 10.10 hours. Sortie Report No. 592.
Twelve Baltimores detailed to bomb FROSINONE town. One aircraft failed to take-off and the remaining eleven set course with 223 Squadron leading. A close pattern of bombs straddled the town followed by columns of brown smoke and dust. Enemy opposition nil. On return the undercarriage of the second aircraft to land collapsed (no personnel casualties) and this blocked the run-way. The remaining nine aircraft were diverted to CANNE L.G. where all were down by 14.30 hours, later returning to base.
Sortie Report No. 593
Colonel Hartshorn, accompanied by other senior Officers paid the Squadron an official visit.
