L.G. 98

Tonight saw the official opening of our Parliamentary Debating circle when a fairly large and representative gathering of the squadron's personnel rolled up to hear the chosen leaders proclaim the aims and objects of their respective "parties".
There had been considerable activity in the camp during the day by energetic "canvassers" rounding up supporters for the various party programmes. Lieut Newman who introduced the speakers, stated that the present time was an opportune one for members of the squadron to indulge in some "mental exercise” and that a Parliamentary Debating Society, giving all members the opportunity of learning how to express themselves and providing interesting and current topics for discussion, was the best step in that direction.
The speakers representing the three main parties then addressed their audience through a "mike" provided by our Signals sections and constructed of odd bits of Jerry and "Itie" equipment. The speakers, who were all a trifle nervous at the outset of their addresses, spoke for the "Union Radical Party" (S/Maj. J. Friedman) "Progressive Partv" (A/EpI. J. MacIntyre) and "Union Liberals" (A/Sgt. C. Te Water Pohl). At the conclusion of the addresses those present were called upon to vote for the party they chose to support.
By a narrow margin the "Union Radicals" were returned to Parliament as the Government, with the"Progressives" as the Official Opposition, the Cross Benches being filled by the "Liberals" who represented the former Government. It is hoped to hold the official "Opening of Parliament" at some date in the near future when the "Speech from the Throne" will be read and debated by the "21 Squadron House of Assembly". Judging by the support accorded the opening proceedings tonight, this experiment may become a popular feature of squadron activities in the days to come.
