Again the six Marylands winged their way to BENGHASI but this time a reception party was waiting for them on the outward journey and as they were definitely out for a little fight and having the advantage to terrain and reinforcements the leader wisely decided to abandon the show and return.
No flying: Oprep No. 139
Routine Order No. 55/42
Until further orders the Squadrons in No. 3 (S.A.) and No. 232 Wings are to provide one Squadron for stand-by each day, the remaining Squadrons to stand down. This will permit of leave up to 24 hours being granted and any personnel desiring to pay two-day visits to the battle-fields are to be provided with transport.
Capt. Dieu who was reported missing after the raid on the 3rd, returned to the Squadron. He had baled out, hidden for five days in enemy territory and eventually managed to reach the Allied lines.
A formation of twelve aircraft took off at 12.00 hours to attack guns, troops and M.T. at STAZ DI PALENA. It was found necessary to complete two circuits before the target was identified and the attack was made.
The second box did not see the leading box bomb until bomb bursts were seen over the target; they then made another run but lost the target in cloud and only saw it when it was too late to release the bombs. The leaders then ordered the box to jettison their bombs in the sea.
