"SUPER-BOMBING– BLOODY GOOD SHOW” this message sent by of our W.T./Airgunners in Syko was the first and eagerly awaited intimation today of the success of the longest raid yet undertaken by our Squadron.
Our objective in our first operation for a week was a landing ground near DERNA and the photographs taken proved the optimism of the message, sent by wireless as the planes were nearing their destination, fully justified. Our raid "hit the headlines" in the B.B.C. news the following morning.
In the failing light of day five Blenheims from 55 Squadron came to "put up for the night" at our landing ground to avoid the attentions of enemy bombers who had been causing a certain amount of damage at their own drome. One of the Blenheims, after making a perfect landing in the gathering darkness, taxied up to the edge of the landing ground when its undercarriage collapsed suddenly. Our ambulance and fire tender were on the spot immediately but fortunately their presence was not required, the sergeant-pilot, who was the only occupant of the aircraft, clambering out unhurt.
