Late this afternoon the funeral party returned, having travelled several hundred miles, all to no purpose. The funeral took place at RAMLEH in Palestine. The signal might have been more specific – an unnecessary trip might thereby have been saved.
Rear party
Instructions were received from the Embarkation Officer that “B” party, had to embark during the afternoon. “B” party vehicles were formed up and left for La Goulette, the port of Embarkation at 1700 Hrs. About an hour after arrival at the port, loading of vehicles was started. This was carried on, until 0100 Hrs., when loading of any more vehicles of this Squadron was stopped, as priority was given to a T.B.F Unit, by the Embarkation Officer in spite of the fact that all vehicles were marked “Priority”. The result was that some of the Squadron Vehicles had to be loaded on to another barge, as there was no room left on the barge.
Formation of 12 Baltimores led by Capt Stuart took off at 0605 hours and attacked DUMP SOUTH of BRONTE. The target was obscured by the shadow of Mount Etna. The incendiaries were dropped between the Railway track on and across the main road and into some trees and lands. Not many bursts were seen but 6 small fires were started, smoke rising about 100 feet. One vivid explosion seen. No fire developed. Moderate and accurate H.A.A before and during bombing run. Two aircraft sustained minor damage.
