El Firdan

Early morning slumbers were disturbed by the sound of Jerry aircraft overhead, proceeded by the wail of our siren. Air raid warning "Black" had been received over the telephone from ISMAILIA, and this resulted in a hurried scramble for rifles and revolvers by pyjama clad figures in the light of the waning moon. It later transpired that "Black." warnings do not indicate, as in the Western Desert, that enemy paratroops are making a landing, but that "Black" means “Take cover – enemy aircraft overhead”.
However, any further alarms will find us prepared for all contingencies as our "Armoured Truck" with duty crews has again been put into operation.
Lt. Col. IRVINE who is temporarily attached to No. 12 Squadron on operational duties, arrived by Baltimore this afternoon from L.G. 99.

Only one raid to-day. Twelve Baltis airborne at 08.55 hours to bomb railway line between FAENZA and FORLI. Set course from FERMO with escort of eight Spits. 10/10 cloud at 8000 feet base from ANCONA northwards forced the formation to turn back with bomb load. Some delay bombs were jettisoned at sea. Seven unidentified single inline aircraft fighters closed in within 1500 yards of the formation in target area. Two gunners fired short bursts when aircraft made for cloud. Escort did not leave bomber formation. All aircraft landed at 11.20 hours.
Sortie Report No. 749.
Nothing out of the ordinary to report, except that fresh fruit has made its appearance which in a way caused quite a stir in more ways than one. It is no common sight to see the lavatory as the goal, and several personnel have lowered their times for the 100 yards by quite a big margin. The Medical Officers do not agree that fresh fruit is the cause. They blame the flies. All our fruit and vegetables are soaked in disinfectant before being issued as rations. Squadron Routine Order No. 63/44.
