The day started early for a great number of us when a lone Jerry aircraft could be heard overhead at about 0400 hours flying fairly low. The unpleasantly familiar sound brought a number of old-stagers from their tents in time to see a flash in the sky as the aircraft dropped a bomb followed by a terrific explosion which shook the camp. There was no further disturbance and with the aircraft’s departure the "All Clear" was sounded shortly after. Inspection later revealed that the enemy aircraft had apparently jettisoned a large landmine which had fallen some miles from the camp, tearing a gaping hole in the open desert.
